Although its a hypothetical question, because a lot depends on the Angle of Xray beam to distance between beam source and samples and so on. However the simplest answer could be an approx 10 - 15 Microns depending on the collimator size, position, type of filters used and also the composition of the sample itself.

Having smaller or optimized collimator ensures the depth of penetration of Xray beam is higher than large collimator. Which means the coated or plated jewellery can be detected easily and more accurately, smaller collimator also travels deeper into the surface of jewellery or gold sample, ensure the results are more reliable. Another big issue with large collimator or scanning area is, that most jewellery are smaller and with large scanning area, the Xray is scattered inside the testing chamber, putting the user or people around the machine into risks of getting Exposed to Xray radiation. Since the use case of Xray gold testing machines are mostly retail shops or normal gold testing labs and gold manufacturing factories, who do not wear Xray protection Apron during the machine operation, so xray equipments must have only smaller size of collimator for safety reasons, apart from quality of detecting fake and low purity jewellery.

XRF based gold testing machines are most accurate. Different models and designs have different accuracy. But most common can be dependent based on the detectors it use - Proportional counter detector within 0.3% accuracy, Si Pin Diode Detector within 0.2%, Silicon Drift detector within 0.1% accuracy. Although accuracy depends on several factors including the design of hardware, software and experience in scientific calculations and measurement theories to develop software and algorithms.
